Advice My Mam Gave Me As A Young Boy

As the eldest child and the only brother to my three sisters, my Mam always instilled in me the importance and significance of the fairer sex.

Here are some of the things my mam taught me from a young age…

1. How To Change Nappies

My Mam taught me how to change the bairns, my youngest sister Tricia’s nappy. l don’t think l ever saw my Dad do the same. haha!

2. Putting The Toilet Seat Down

She also trained me in the simpler hygienic acts around the toilet, keeping the seat down for the girls etc.

It certainly came in handy years later, being the father myself of three daughters!

3. Taking Care of Big Brother Duties

The first school we all attended was approximately ¼ of a mile from our house.

lt was my job to ensure that my sisters got to their respective classes on time and before 9 am!

At 12 noon we broke for lunch and l had to scurry around the school to pick them up again and head on home for lunch (we called it dinner).

Then back to school from 1 pm until 4 pm.

4. Treating My Sisters Well

...especially during that time of the month.

Years later, my mother sat me down and told me about the birds and the bees and as my sisters were getting older there were certain times of the month when l was not allowed to play rough with them.

Fast forward to years later I had absolutely no problem being the one to pick up monthly products for my daughters at the local shop. That’s what girl Dad’s do of course.
